Merang Village

Merang  (not to be confused with Marang) is a sleepy fishing village
and is the jumping off point for islands like Redang, Lang Tengah and so on.
Few people stay back at Merang and for years, Aryani was the main resort there,
till Best Western Merang Suria Resort came along.

Idyllic looking fishing village scene

Majestically tall coconut trees, no skyscrapers or twin towers here
You can park your car anywhere, no jaga keretas or DBKL issuing summons
or people smashing your car window (RM300 to repair)
to steal your RM3.00 loose change.
Palm lined dirt track with no traffic

Stark in its simplicity
A well!
There is water inside
City slicker like J has never seen a well
The water is clean and cool down there, it never dries up
and you need a pail on a rope to hoist up the water.
Coconut groves
Lambs penned up, unlike the ones we saw roaming the streets
This is the first time I see a village house with a fence
The best way to spend hot afternoons
Slung in a low hammock under the trees in your
kampung halaman on the beach by the sea...
