Process of Hand drawn batik (by Jadi Batik)

(Acknowledgment)
I got this process from Jadi Batik.

When I was teaching in Cheras School, I bought this whole kit from Pn Norhayati complete with a piece of white cotton cloth but I did not use it so I gave it to my nephew Conal and his wife Rachael from Brazil.

Major Tools
1. WAX

2. RESIN
3. DYE
4. CANTING
5. COLOR BRUSH
6. BRUSH
7. SODA
8. SILICATE

Wax Drawing

1. Melt the WAX and RESIN in 50%-50% ratio in a bowl with heater.

2. Fill the CANTING with the mixture of WAX and RESIN

3. Draw the wax on a white fabric. The fabric can be cotton or silk. The process has to be fast and accurate because the wax will cool down fast and cannot be corrected once applied.

Colour Painting

4. By using the color brush, artist paint the enclosed area with the needed colors. Sometimes, clean water is used to produce shading effect. Again, the choice of color is limited only to the creativity of artist.

Color Fixing
5. When the color is dry completely, apply a layer of sodium silicate on the fabric to fix the color and leave it for at least 4 hours The colors will be durable and will not fade easily.

Dewaxing
6. Put some SODA in the water and boil the fabric for few minutes. The wax will be removed from the fabric.

Drying
7. Hang the fabric for drying. A piece of batik is created.
